The research at Mitokine Bioscience extends the work of Founder and CEO, Dr. Brooke Ligon. Dr. Ligon received her medical degree from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and her Ph.D in Neuroscience from the Sackler School at Tufts University School of Medicine. The science is based on the hypothesis that cells leak growth factors when injured to protect surrounding cells from further damage and stimulate cell division to replace the irreparable.
The data in a recent publication by Dr. Ligon and co-authors demonstrate that products of pancreatic beta cells can be protective and mitogenic, stimulating cell division in the islet. Mitokine scientists are now testing the hypothesis that restoring these beta cell products to those with Type 1 diabetes will regenerate insulin producing cells.
